 Today was a great day of coaching, where we bring in a guest teacher to help develop our students dancing. A new voice, a different vocabulary, a different body type, perhaps a different way of communicating...these lead to what we lovingly call "dance epiphanies".  These "light bulb" moments where a student is struck with understanding of concepts their teacher has been training on with them. It's so exciting to see what happens for the students who choose to use this tool.  A favorite quote from student Perry about enrollment for coaching: "Every time I sign up for coaching I think 'This is expensive.', and every time I've completed a coaching session I think 'This is the best money I've ever spent.'." Last evening some students in group class decided to go out an use what they have been learning. Exciting!  They had a great time together.  The ladies were telling us there was one gentleman who was dipping every partner that he danced with,  and were asking they best way to let this gentleman know they did not want to dance with him if he insisted on dipping them. He may have mistakenly believed every lady enjoys a dip, we will give grace and assume good intentions. When you go from class to a night out 'in the wild' where anything can happen and you encounter new partners there are recommendations... When you are dancing with a partner for the first time, assume they are a beginner!  You don't know what they know or what physical injuries are in their past.  It's important for safety and courtesy to connect with them and then connect with the music.  Enjoy some foundational movements while you feel the partnership before deciding to go further.  Good news... you do not have to wait for your spouse to agree to come learn to dance with you as we have many married people that enjoy learning to dance without their partner.   So many people have the misunderstanding that they need to have a partner to begin.  When you are taking lessons, the instructor is in the role of dance partner and many students have found that they learn faster working with a professional 1:1 than when they are working with their beginning partner. Some of the saddest stories we hear are from people who waited, and waited for their romantic partner to want to enjoy this hobby with them and they deferred their own development and joy and postponed beginning.  Don't delay fulfilling your deepest desires.  Tomorrow is promised no one.  We have yet to meet the student who says "I wish I started later."  What is a Showcase?  It's a live dance exhibition with solo performances of varied styles of dances such as Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Hustle, West Coast Swing, Paso Doble, Cha Cha, East Coast Swing, Merengue, and more.  There is a live audience! All bodies types, all ages, all levels of dance students are included.  Many are doing something for the first time, which is brave.   Most are dancing with their instructor as their partner, but some are students dancing with students. We also frequently include a ladies only routine or a couples only routine, where everyone in the group is dancing the same routine on time to the same music.  While it is easier to dance without the layers of connection and balance required when we dance with a partner, dancing as a unit has it's own challenges including precision in musicality.  Have you heard of this phrase before?  Most new to dance are in a hurry to advance.  Most advanced dancers understand the most advanced moves are simply basic movements done with the highest level of technique.  Your dance foundation is very important.  It never leaves you.  It supports everything that comes after.
